3 Tips For Better Christmas Tree Pictures

A Christmas tree can set the mood in your home for the holidays. It kicks off Christmas together as a family when you decorate it, giving it some of your family's personality. It continues to bring the magic of the season into your home as the lights twinkle day and night.
A Christmas tree is the backdrop for many family traditions, and here are 3 of my tips to capture those moments.

1. Take Advantage of Natural Light

If you don't want the "yellowish" glow in your pictures(like the one at the top of this post), take pictures in front of the tree during the day! This picture was taken at in the middle of the day with all of my blinds open, lights in the house off, and the tree lights on.

2. Move your subject or yourself

The farther your subject is from the tree, the blurrier the background will be. It gives the lights on the tree that extra special glow and blurriness! This can also be done if you move in closer to your subject. In both pictures of my boys they are sitting in the exact same spot, the only difference is that I moved in closer in the second picture.

3. Change your focus

Sometimes it is fun to capture little details that your children will look back on and cherish. Emma was SO excited to put this thumbprint ornament on the tree that she made in preschool 2 years ago. Even if the ornament doesn't survive the years, this picture sure will!

*These pictures are also a good example of how the picture will change with less light. From the first tip picture to the last we were quickly loosing the afternoon light on that side of my house!

Happy Holidays and good luck capturing the memories!
